Venessa Ochieng

Venessa was one of four Wesleyan students who had the chance to participate in the SSRP 2023 cohort. Here, she talks about her experience in the program!

As part of a special cohort of Wesleyan students who participated in the SSRP, Venessa is an aspiring physician-scientist and a college sophomore who wanted to learn more about biomedical research.

What were you hoping to gain from the SSRP program?

“I was hoping to get a basic introduction into research.”

How has your participation in the program impacted your interest in science/research?

“I have gained insight into how academic research works, and how broad the field is. I made meaningful connections with my mentors whom I have kept in touch with.”

How did the SSRP impact your personal growth?

“I got to improve my presentation skills and independence by carrying out my own research project!”

“Watching Oppenheimer together! ”


Venessa was a part of the Gene, Cell, Food track, where she observed how a ketogenic diet affected gene regulation in the liver.
