Raphael A.

Raphael was a Jumpstart student that then moved onto the SSRP'24 cohort. Here, he talks about how his experience in the SSRP changed his view on science and research!

A NYC high school student who started out in our Jumpstart program, Raphael wanted to learn more about science and connect with other like-minded students. After starting the SSRP in the summer, he was able to further explore his scientific interests, as well as meet a variety of students and scientists from around the world!

What were you hoping to gain from the SSRP program?

“I was honestly hoping to gain some friends and a cool way to spend my time. Believe it or not, it was as simple as that.”

How has your participation in the program impacted your interest in science/research?

“It greatly impacted my interest. My interest in everything scientists do and the questions they answer just skyrocketed after my exposures thanks to SSRP.”

How did the SSRP impact your personal growth?

“It gave me a lot of friends I still talk to today. It taught me a few tricks I can use for the future, and to be really honest it brought to my attention how I’ve underestimated the amount of unique people that are in the world.”

I got to do actual experiments, see real brains, and work with real scientists.

What advice would you give to incoming SSRP students to help them make the most of their time?

“Just try stuff and of course ask questions. Seriously everyone’s strange so just go with the flow and add your ideas to the mix.”

Favorite Memory from SSRP?

“All of them, I can’t choose.”

Raphael was a part of the Feeding Brain and Behavior track.
